Across generations, consumers are moving fluidly between two purchasing mindsets: upgrading when a product earns its place through trust, relevance, performance, or convenience, and trading down when it doesn’t. While our data shows the pressure is most visible in the middle of the market, the implications reach every brand and retailer competing for a place in global baskets. The result is a new era of premiumization—one driven less by income alone and more by consumers’ willingness to pay more when value is clearly earned. These mindsets shouldn’t be mistaken for a simple split between consumers who can spend and consumers who can’t, however. The implications are far more significant: Consumers across generations, income levels, and markets are willing to trade up when a product earns the premium, and they’re just as willing to trade down when that value is unclear. This shouldn’t diminish the very real, concurrent economic pressures shaping how consumers shop. Indeed, the global spending base is itself deeply polarized: Affluent and core consumers are projected to spend in near-equal measure in 2026, despite the core consumer population being more than six times as large. These economic realities shape where and how consumers can spend, but viewing them as the sole measure of consumer behavior would be a strategic misstep. Against this backdrop, one implication for brands and retailers is clear: The status quo is no longer a safe place to stand.A Tale of Two Consumers: The polarized mindsets reshaping global consumption is a cross-generational playbook that brings together NIQ survey, consumption, and shopper data with World Data Lab (WDL) projections of income, consumer spending across categories, and demographics.
